While Mr, Pettygrove wanted to name the community after his hometown of Portland, Maine, Mr. Lovejoy wanted to name the community in honor of his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. In order to settle the argument, eventually, they decided to flip a coin, currently known as the Portland Penny. Mr. Pettygrove won two tosses out of three, and the fledgling community was named Portland.
With its abundant natural resources and deep water, Mr. Pettygrove and Mr. Lovejoy appreciated Portland, They believed that Portland would someday become a prosperous and popular port. However, they might not have realized, just how soon it would become popular, and for how it soon it became and for what kind of activities.
During the late 1800's, Portland began its dark history. A hotelier whose name was Joseph Kelly, and was notorious for kidnapping young men and selling them to ship captains. Many hotel owners and bar owners depended on this shanghai trade to supplement their businesses, and Mr. Kelly was very good at his trade. He was paid by unscrupulous ship captains to intoxicate potential crew members and would deliver his intoxicated quarry to waiting ships. These unfortunate men would awake he next day and be forced to work for indefinite time periods while they were stranded at sea.
Mr. Kelly frequently told anyone who would listen that he could gather a full crew in under 12 hours. Ship captains would inevitably challenge him. With his desire to fulfill his boast, one night Mr . Kelly came in contact with a group of men who had somehow found their way into the open cellar of a mortuary. The men each drank cups of embalming fluid, which they mistook for liquor believing that the cellar was a part of the Snug Harbor Pub. Many of the men had died while others were dying by the time that Mr. Kelly found them. Before the truth was known, Mr. Kelly sold all of the men to ship captains whose ships had already sailed by claiming that all of the men were simply unconscious from too much liquor.
Mr. Kelly also delivered a 10 cent store Indian that was wrapped heavily in blankets to a ship in another attempt to make a fast buck. The next morning, when the captain realized that his new crew-member was a wooden statue, he became so angry that he threw it overboard. Some 60 years later, two men operating a dredge recovered the statue.
During the late 1800's, another interesting character in the history of Portland was a woman known as Sweet Mary, who owned a brothel. In order to evade community laws and taxes, she ran her bordello on a barge that operated on the Willamette River. Legally, she was outside the jurisdiction of everybody.
However, the end of the interesting years of early Portland came in the early 1900's. The economy was stabilized with the wealth from providing goods for the California Gold Rush and secure jobs in the lumber mills. The population of Portland had additional time to regulate the nefarious activities of the busy waterfront.
A man whose name was Simon Benson personified this shift in attitude. Mr. Benson was a tee-totalling philanthropist and lumber baron. Mr Benson noticed the odor of alcohol on the breath of his workers while he was walking through his mill one day.
